Coaching Session Checklist: During a Session

How to ensure your client gets the most out of their coaching session.

Start strong.

  • Greet your client warmly and set a positive tone.
  • Confirm the session’s agenda and/or focus.

Be present.

  • Actively listen and avoid interrupting.
  • Watch for non-verbal cues (e.g. tone, body language).

Guide the conversation.

  • Use coaching tools and/or models as needed to provide structure and keep the session on track.
  • Ask open-ended, powerful questions.
  • Encourage reflection and self-discovery rather than offering solutions directly. (However, keep in mind that everyone is different and some clients welcome opinions and suggestions.)

Highlight key insights.

  • Summarize important realizations or patterns that emerge.
  • Celebrate your client’s wins (big and small) and other notable progress they’ve made so far.

End with action items.

  • Summarize the session’s key takeaways.
  • Collaboratively agree on your client’s next steps and/or action items.
  • Book your client’s next session.
