Coaching Session Checklist: During a Session
How to ensure your client gets the most out of their coaching session.
Start strong.
- Greet your client warmly and set a positive tone.
- Confirm the session’s agenda and/or focus.
Be present.
- Actively listen and avoid interrupting.
- Watch for non-verbal cues (e.g. tone, body language).
Guide the conversation.
- Use coaching tools and/or models as needed to provide structure and keep the session on track.
- Ask open-ended, powerful questions.
- Encourage reflection and self-discovery rather than offering solutions directly. (However, keep in mind that everyone is different and some clients welcome opinions and suggestions.)
Highlight key insights.
- Summarize important realizations or patterns that emerge.
- Celebrate your client’s wins (big and small) and other notable progress they’ve made so far.
End with action items.
- Summarize the session’s key takeaways.
- Collaboratively agree on your client’s next steps and/or action items.
- Book your client’s next session.
